Ambulance handover published
Emergency care needs fast, effective sharing of information so that patients get the urgent support they need. When clinicians have access to essential information, they can better ensure that care will be safe and high-quality. Last year, we completed a standard for the information that is shared when care is transferred from ambulances to emergency departments.
Whichever ambulance service brings the patient to the hospital, there will be a consistent set of information available to the emergency department. Emergency care professionals will know what medications have been administered, what diagnostic tests have been done, whether the patient has any allergies and other important information. The handover standard will improve continuity of care, and help clinicians to arrange patient discharge and prevent unnecessary admissions.
